GrimmGirl is…

You heard right Grimms! My husband and I are super excited to say our family is growing. If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram then you’re already up to date on the news but I wanted to make a formal announcement here as well.

A while back you guys might remember me complaining about being sick and my recovering taking some time well it turned out I was actually pregnant 😀 So I will actually be “recovering” for about nine months!

This does effect the blog a bit because while I’m so excited to be pregnant I’m also really sick. The nausea is no joke let me tell you that up front. I’m also incredible tired. Making a baby is hard! You’ll notice new talk about my super long naps in Twitter and Snapchat. I’m not exaggerating them! I really take about 3 hour long naps everyday.

I’m almost done with my first trimester though (only 1 more month to go as of writing this) so hopefully the nausea will die down and I’ll hs be more energy during my second trimester. With that said you never know with babies… With muy first daughter I was sick until my 7th month.

I will keep chugging along on GrimmGirl though as best I can. I hope to put out at least a post a week and as I fell better I will post more often. I also hope to livestream again soon but unfortunately my camera broke! I’ll let you all know when I get a new one.

Finally I have been working with a graphic designer for a logo for GrimmGirl and it’s almost finished. I can’t wait unveil everything to you all soon! I really hope you like it as much as I do.

That’s all for the upcoming stuff 🙂 Thanks for all of your support!

Love you Grimms ❤

I thought you all might enjoy this picture. It’s a picture of my first daughter and I after she was born ❤ I did a home water birth.  Which explains the pool a d the bookshelf!

Blogger in the Spotlight: Krystallina from DaiyaManga

Hey Grimms,

It’s time for our Blogger in the Spotlight! This month goes to the talented blogger Krystallina from DaiyaManga. I think many of you will truly enjoy this blogger if you are not already familiar with the site. We’ll get right to it today and I’ll give you three excellent reasons to check DaiyaManga out ASAP.

Three Cheers!

One: The Slogan Says It All

“Finding the brightest gems in anime, manga, and video games at rock-bottom prices.”

Do I really need to say anything more? Krystallina puts it so perfectly! If you are into any of the above things (mark me down for all three) than DaiyaManga is going to be a wonderful resource for you! I know it has been for me. A blog dedicated to anime, manga, and video games? That’s basically the core of my being!

You had me at anime.

Two: Newbies Welcome

Are you new to the otaku world? Some of the terms can be hard to understand. I remember when I first started really getting into anime, so young and innocent… Until I curiously wondered what this, “Yaoi” term I kept coming across meant. Boy was I in for a surprise when I googled it!

Have no fear, Krystallina is here! If you go to DaiyaManga you will be happy to see a wonderful Glossary compiled with a bunch of different terms and such that you will commonly come across in the anime/manga scene.

A very cool resource!

Three: Oh the DEALS

Krystallina is keeping track of those manga, anime, and video games! Let’s be honest buying this stuff gets expensive quick so knowing when a deal is available is a must! We’ve got to stay on top of this people!

On top of letting her followers know when a deal is happening she also updates her posts to let everyone know when the deal is expired. I find that very helpful. There is nothing worse than thinking there’s a deal going on, getting to the site and being pumped, and then finding out it’s no longer available.

You’re going to find reviews and fun things like that on DaiyaManga but you are also going to find things unique to Krystallina. I think that’s pretty darn cool! So next chance you get I advise you check the site out. Explore a new blog and maybe find someone whose style you really connect with. Isn’t that one of the cool things about being in the blog world to begin with?

Thanks for checking in with me Grimms! I hope you enjoyed this Blogger in the Spotlight and I look forward to sharing another site with you all next month!

Peace ❤ Love

First Impressions: Low The Delirium Of Hope

Hey Grimms!

I know Wednesdays are usually the days that I do some sort of Otaku geared review but you all know me by this point. It’s not uncommon for me to just kind of roll with things. I mean that’s the best part of writing for my own blog! The schedule I have is really more of a guideline and when something else sparks my interest that guideline goes right out of the window.

So what sparked my interest?

The graphic novel Low written Rick Remender with cover art by Greg Tocchini is what sparked my interest I tell you. Recently my friend Tony gave me the first volume because they thought I would enjoy it.

* Shameless Promotion Time *

Tony happens to be a pretty kickass artist so if you’re ever looking for some cool things to check out you should go through his Instagram @Imtonylol (click on name) you won’t regret it!

* Back to the Topic At Hand *

So Tony gave me Low Vol 1: The Delirium of Hope and from the moment I saw the cover art I was pretty sure I had a winner on my hands. I know they say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but damn. Are you seeing what I’m seeing? Can we just take a moment to give Greg Tocchini I resounding round of applause for this artwork?

After I was done eyeing up the cover I flipped it around to read the description. Once again I was intrigued!

“Millennia ago, mankind fled the earth’s surface into the bottomless depths of the darkest oceans. Shielded from a merciless sun’s scorching radiation, the human race tried to stave off certain extinction by sending robotic probes far into the galaxy, to search for a new home among the stars. Generations later, one family is about to be torn apart, in conflict that will usher in the final race to save humanity from a world beyond hope. Dive into an aquatic fantasy like none you’ve ever seen before, as writer RICK REMENDER (BLACK SCIENCE, Captain America) and artist GREG TOCCHINI (Last Days of American Crime) bring you a tale of mankind’s final hour in the cold, deathly dark of the sea…” –Image Comics

How are you all not immediately searching for a copy of this after hearing this plot?

I was more than a little pumped to finally get some time to sit down and read the first volume.

First Impression

I need to finish this series!

The artwork throughout Low is flawless and the storytelling is no joke. I personally like a bit of a darker side to the stories a read and Rick completely delivers on that end. If you like stories filled with sunshine and unicorns this is not the story for you. This story is dark. Things happen and the line between right and wrong isn’t always clear. The characters are complex, flawed, and most importantly human. They’re paths are not going to be cut and dry because humanity isn’t cut and dry.

I am a sucker for a strong female lead and Low certainly brings that with their character Stel. I don’t want to give anything away but as far as first impressions go she is a total badass. She is described as an optimist but I wouldn’t classify her as some dowey eyed character that just hopes for the best. Her optimism is her source of strength. Even when everyone has fallen to despair she is able to draw on her optimism to move forward. Even after facing things that would break anybody down she is able to stand. If that isn’t strong I don’t know what is.

Rick’s style of writing and storytelling reminds me of Neil Gaiman and his Sandman series. I say this a very high form of complement. Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors and The Sandman series is one of my favorite stories. The reason I find them similar is that Neil has away of telling a story and unseating you. Making you feel slightly uncomfortable while still pushing you forward. You want to see what happens next but the reactions of the characters are so raw that you can’t help but feel slightly apprehensive.

What is going to happen next?

Its stories like this that really stick with you and I have to give Rick credit for being able to write so convincingly. I find myself disgusted by the society that has been created through humanity’s lack of strength but at the same time I’m rooting for them. I want humanity to be saved even if they seem beyond saving. Even though it seems hopeless I want there to be hope.

This story has me hooked.

Final Thoughts

I will be collecting the rest of this series ASAP. I need to see how Rick completes the tale and I simply cannot get enough of Greg’s artwork. I am also considering doing a volume-by-volume review of this series.

What do you all think about that? Any interest?

See you later Grimms and don’t forget to comment below with your thoughts!

YouTube Star: Miles Jai

Grimms ❤

I know that in the past I had been running a YouTube MUA series where I showcased a different MUA every month that you could follow and learn makeup tips from and I swear to you that this will still be happening! This month I had to go with more of a YouTube Star rather than makeup artist exactly.

I think after you see my three reasons to follow Miles Jai you will know exactly why I had to discuss them on GrimmGirl!

Miles Jai might just be my favorite person on YouTube right now and has been rocking the YouTube scene for a minute but I only started following along this past fall. All I can say is damn I was missing out! So here are three reasons you need to get your life together and go check out Miles Jai!

….Riiiiiight after you finish reading my post of course… (Shameless Self Promotion)

Reason Number One: You’ll Get Makeup Tutorials

And pardon my French but they are fucking hilarious! I love watching Miles’ makeup tutorials because while, yes makeup is happening and you are told exactly what is happening, it’s done very tongue and check. I seriously can’t stop laughing whenever I’m watching these videos because I swear I’ve said these things at some point while doing my makeup!

“Now I’m gonna do something I don’t normally do. Curl my eyelashes! And I did, it did nothing. I also curl my false lashes. This actually does something.”

Bahahaha You get me Miles!

Reason Number Two: Miles is a Kpop Fan

Honestly it was his love of Kpop that brought me to Miles in the first place! Siggghhhh… I remember it like it was yesterday. I was cruising through YouTube minding my business when on the side happen to see a video titled, “Shit Black Kpop Fans Say” and I OF COURSE had to click on it!

I mean helllloooo doods. I’m black and I like Kpop. This video was made for me.

I immediately had to share this video because I’ve literally said all of these things.

Reason Number Three: Miles Isn’t Afraid To Speak Up On Issues

I am also a fan of anyone who is able to use their platform to discuss important topics of the day. Yeah it can be kind of scary to because people are not always going to agree with you and because of that they can be really hurtful. Also if your job depends on your fan base people can be afraid to speak out for fear of the backlash. So when people do it anyway I think that is really respectable.

Miles has talked about things from gender identity, sexual orientation, to his latest talk on the Pepsi commercial. I honestly think that the best part of how Miles goes about his videos is his use of humor. Miles gets super bonus points for me because he is able to discuss heavy topics in away that is accessible to everyone.

So that’s it folks! I hope you dug this article and find Miles Jai as awesome as I do. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Tune in tomorrow for another post by yours truly ❤

Livestream Tonight On My YouTube Channel!

Good afternoon Grimms ❤

Isn’t this special? Two posts in one day! Look at me coming back with a passion. I’ll admit though, this is going to be a REALLY short post!

Basically I just want you all to know that I will be doing a livestream tonight on my YouTube channel. It will be a “Get Ready With Me” sort stream, which is different than my previous livestream work. I’ll be doing a makeup look while explaining the process and in true GrimmGirl style probably getting waaaay off topic by discussing anime, manga, food, otome, and whatever else pops into my brain!

I think the cool thing about doing a makeup tutorial live is that you can ask anything you want in real time. Plus if you’ve seen any of my videos I’ve been a part of you know I have zero tech skills. I’m just getting the hang of this livestream jazz there’s no way I’m going to attempt editing at this point.

So if you want to talk with cool people in chat, watch me do makeup stuff, and talk with me about the otaku life this is the livestream for you! Come hang out today (April 11, 2017 in the US) at 6:30pm Central. If you suck at figuring out timezones (I do) follow me on Twitter @Kat13Sade because I’ll be announcing and posting the link when I begin on there!

I hope to see you there!

Click here for the link to my livestream ❤

The Blogger Recognition Award

Hey Grimms!

Ages and ages ago my friend Matt from Matt-In-The-Hat nominated me for the Blogger Recognition Award. Awwww gracias! Cue my happy face! Unfortunately I haven’t been able to sit down and post about it because I want on my hiatus shortly after being nominated!

Well I’m back in the game and it’s time to crank this post out! The Blogger Recognition Award is given to other bloggers by bloggers to say, “Hey, I dig what you’re doing over there!” Basically it’s all about supporting each other. So I can’t think Matt enough for the shoutout. Too cool!

Blogger Recognition Award

The rules are the following (bum bum buuuuuum)!!!

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
  • Write a post to show your award.
  • Give a brief story of how your blog started.
  • Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers.
  • Select other bloggers you want to give this award to.
  • Comment on each blog and let them know you have nominated them and provide the link to the post you created.

These rules are a piece of cake.

The Story Of GrimmGirl

I feel like at one point or another I’ve discussed this before, for sure when I livestreamed, but basically I started Grimmgirl in November 2015. I wanted a place to talk about all the things I dig and I wanted to find other people who were into those things as well.

I’m really the only one out of my friend group into anime, manga, otome, kdramas, cosplay, kpop/jrock… The list goes on. There are also few people I know in my life who really dig makeup and things like that the way I do. So being able to combine my interest and talk to really awesome people, talk about a win win!

So GrimmGirl was born and it has been a totally blast ever since! I’ve meet so many amazing people and it has really helped to give me perspective on different viewpoints.

Advice For Bloggers

For the love of GOD schedule your posts. I honestly did not know that was a feature at first. Cut me some slack, if chat with me on Twitter or watch my livestreams you’ll know that me and technology do not get a long. However learning how to schedule your posts will safe you so much time, energy, and anguish.

I love scheduling my posts! It frees me up while still letting me to put out content on a regular bases. I don’t get paid for blogging so I still have to go to work, make time for my family, and do all the other stuff everyone else does. Life happens and knowing that I don’t have to worry about blogging every day because I have a week worth’s of posts scheduled is a super relief.

My second piece of advice would be to remember that your blog is just that.

So have fun with it and write about things that interest you. Trust me, there is someone out there who will connect with that. I mean look at GrimmGirl. I have honestly never seen another site that talks about all the lovely otaku things in the world while also discussing makeup, fashion, vegetarian/vegan stuff, and anything else you will find in my Personal Grimmiore section but that’s exactly the stuff I write about! And have meet the coolest people ever doing just that!

So be yourself and write about the things you love! Honestly that is truly the best piece of advice I can give!

Nominated Bloggers

Here are just a few blogger that I dig in this world! So go check them out! I personally hope to here how they each got their blogging starts as well ❤

See you all Friday for my new OWLS post! Just a sneak peak into what I’ll be discussing but look forward to some talk on Bleach!

Vegans VS Vegetarians… The Final Showdown!

* Ominous Music *

The fierce battle between Vegans and Vegetarians is finally here!!!!!!

Just kidding. No battling people, this is a non-violent site after all. Nope, I’m doing this post because as I have lived my vegetarian life, I’ve noticed I get a lot of questions on what I eat versus what a vegans eats.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve said something like, “I love eggs!” Only to be meet with a smug look from a meat-eating friend who responds, “Ohhhhh! So I guess you’re not really a vegetarian then are you!”

Followed by a long debate of, “Yes I am” “But you eat eggs!” and then explaining that it’s a vegan that doesn’t eat eggs. Then having to explain that eggs are NOT meat because they are unfertilized yo! On the rare occasion I have to explain what unfertilized means and that just makes me feel like I’m in my freshman health class…

So to avoid further awkwardness here’s a guide on Vegans and Vegetarians for all of you omnivores out there!

Let me end the confusion and break it down for ya’ll

Vegans do not wear, eat, or use ANY animal products or byproducts. This means no:

Now some of you may be thinking, “What the heck. You don’t kill animals for wool, silk, eggs or dairy so why give it up?” You are right that we don’t necessarily kill them but that doesn’t mean that we are very nice to them either.

The fact is that milk produced by cows (or any other animal) is made by basically keeping them in a state of breastfeeding. This of course increases their risk of mastitis, which is extremely painful and can honestly lead to death. It’s also not very natural.

Speaking as a woman who breastfeed a child for almost two years I can honestly say I feel a bit for the animals. Breastfeeding was all-good but I was able to stop when I wanted to. These animals don’t have that option and vegans take this into consideration when making their consumer choices.

Chickens don’t fair much better in the whole laying eggs departments. Specially particularly at huge factory farms (Tyson I’m looking at you) chickens are often kept in inhumane conditions, such as multiple hens in a cage, and it is not uncommon for their beaks to be removed because of the fighting such lack of space causes. On top of that laying eggs becomes a top priority. If a hen isn’t doing her job producing enough eggs she’s sent to slaughter. It’s as simple as that.

If you’re really interested in more on this subject I suggest checking out this post by PETA 21 Things the Egg Industry Doesn’t Want You To See

The same justification is used for wool, silk, and honey. Basically as humans we consume too much and our animals are suffering for it. There’s a big difference from the Laura Ingalls Wilde days when a family owned a few sheep and sheered them by themselves VS now when we have multiple animals shoved together and trying to use them as quickly as possible.

Frankly it has just become all too easy for humans to abuse animals without facing any repercussions. Instead of animals being appreciated for the resources they can provide for us they’re being taken advantage of which has lead to rampant abuse. I’m talking cases of (for instance) a sheep shearers being caught punching, kicking, and stomping on sheep while hitting them in the face with electric clippers in order to get them to hold still while shearing.

Not cool.

For more information on the pitfalls of wool check out this post by Gentle World and their post What’s Wrong With Wool

Are all animals subject to this type of torture in the industry? No. However how do we tell? Your wool sweater doesn’t come with a tag saying, “FYI this sheep was treated inhumanely in order to obtain this wool. Enjoy.” Which is how vegans came to be. They would rather avoid it all then risk even one animal being mistreated.

Personally I think that’s really cool.

As a vegetarian this is hilarious to me. Being a vegetarian has certainly cut down on my fast food intake!

Vegetarians will not eat ANY animal products and don’t wear products that caused death to an animal. This means no:

Again this goes to the conditions in which animals are kept before slaughter and the simple fact that they are killed. For me I realize that I can survive just fine without meat/fish so what’s the point? Also once again we are not consuming meat the way we use to in the good ole days. We’re factory farming it and that is having huge environmental consequences.

Look I’m terrible about taking long showers, there are many times I could walk/bike instead of drive (and I don’t), I constantly forget to turn the water off while I’m brushing my teeth/washing my face, and I’ll admit I’m not always on my A-Game when it comes to recycling but I can stop eating meat/fish ❤ Which is a pretty big win for the environment.

ChooseVeg.Com does a really good job showing the benefits of the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle for our planet.

You may also encounter some vegetarians who like me, have vegan tendencies. I may eat eggs and honey but I’ve been reducing my dairy by a lot. My goal is to someday have a few chickens of my own and when (and if) they lay eggs I’ll just eat them. No pressure chickens 🙂 you lay eggs on your own time! I know I still have some improvements to make with the way I’m consuming food but I feel like I’ve come a long way!

So there you have it! The difference between Vegans and Vegetarians ❤ I hope you all enjoyed it and learned about things. Have any questions or would like to add anything please comment below. This is not a hatefest on either side or against omnivores so please keep comments respectful. We’re all here to learn and we’re all doing our best so let’s remember that!

Much love Grimms!
