Dragon Ball Season 1 Revisited: Well That Surprised Me

Hey Grimms,

I recently got my husband to watch Dragon Ball with me! It’s the first anime he’s ever watched all the way through. I was able to get him to watch a Dragonball movie and it sparked his interest so we decided to start watching the series together.

It has been so long since I have last seen  Dragon Ball! Honestly it’s kind of like watching it for the first time for me. I mean I remember most of the big stuff but I’ve kind of forgotten how things came about. There were also a few things that really through me off that I had completely forgotten about, but we’ll get to that later.

“Dragon Ball follows the adventures of an extrodinarily strong boy named Goku as he searches for the seven dragon balls. These balls, when combined, can grant the owner any one wish he desires. Along the way he makes new friends, and enemies, and he trains to become the strongest fighter in the world.” -IMDb

First Reaction: Flow of Show

The above is a fairly good summary of the show but I would warn anyone starting this show not to be surprised that the dragon balls do take a bit of a back seat in this season. Don’t get me wrong they do look for dragon balls but I feel like that starts to become a secondary thing as we start to learn more about Goku. Not to mention as we watch Goku become more dedicated to training.

Reaction Two: Gotta Love the Potty Humor

Oh my goodness everyone I seriously forgot about all of the toilet jokes! You should’ve seen Adam’s (my husband’s) face the first time Goku whipped out his penis like it was nothing. First episode by the way! I have to say I was laughing myself. Seriously Goku is basically a nudist in season one.

On top of that there’s the pooping, peeing, stinky, and everything else type joke running rampant. You can’t get through an episode without hearing about diareah. One thing is clear in the Dragon Ball universe… everybody poops.

Reaction Three: WHOA RAPE CULTURE! I’m going to need you to tone it down.

Before watching this I told Adam that Master Roshi was a pervert but I had really forgotten the extent. I didn’t even remember Oolong! My young brain must of blocked it out because that character is the worst! Adam was incredibly disturbed by him right along with me.

Spoiler Alert!

At one point Oolong literally date rape drugs both Goku and Bulma so that he can grope and look at Bulma without interupption. Luckily his plan doesn’t quite work out but still, what the hell! That’s not okay. I hate when we as a society act like stuff like this is funny because it’s not. It’s so scary!

Oolong basically spends the entire series doing stuff like that and it is completely cringe worthy. To be honest if you have experienced any sort of trauma in your life you might want to proceed with caution if you decide to watch this season.

Master Roshi isn’t that much better. I remember him being this perverted man who liked to look at dirty magazines and got nosebleeds when girls looked at him. I feel like that’s what he becomes later on in the series but in this first season he’s pretty bad.

He’s not drugging anyone like Oolong but he’s certainly pressing his advantage. Which is horrifying. Bulma takes the brunt of his attacks and I just want to remind everyone that she’s still just a kid! I mean she’s only 15 or 16 so Master Roshi making passes at her is unacceptable.

He’s constantly asking to put his face in her boobs/touch them or trying to get her to trade things by her flashing her panties for him. Can we just take a moment to realize how unfunny this stuff is? She’s a young girl and he is a full grown man who is using his age to take advantage of her sexually.

This type of relationship happens a lot in real life. I remember when I was in high school going to the prom and we stopped at a bowling alley beforehand. When we went to leave this group of really old men stopped us and one of them was telling me how pretty I was. Then he basically pulled me on to his lap and said, “Now don’t you worry I’m just an old man but you’re so pretty I wish I was younger. Who’s your date? You better treat this pretty one right tonight. I know I would.” Then him and all of his old friends laughed.

I was so humiliated! I didn’t know what to do though and neither did my friends. I mean these were elderly men that we were all taught to respect. So I just giggled along and we all said we really needed to go and then left as quick as possible.

It wasn’t funny at all. Sadly this wasn’t the first time an elderly man had made me uncomfortable like that and it wouldn’t be the last. Talk to some of your friends around you. You’ll hear some stories. Not just from women either. This happens with men too.

Needless to say those instances in Dragon Ball were really awful for me and I really hate seeing stuff like that!

Final Thoughts

It was fun rewatching this season (minus the rape culture) and I got a kick out of seeing all the young characters. I have to admit that I kind of forgot that there was a time Krillin wasn’t sooo far behind Goku!

As immature as it is a still laugh at all of the toilet humor. It’s so silly that I can’t help myself!

I do wish that first season had a more compelling bad guy though. There’s nobody that really gives the characters a good run for their money. Makes you really miss Freezer that’s for sure.

Enjoy the rest of your day Grimms! If you’ve seen the first season oif Dragon Ball comment below with your thoughts for other readers to consider. You all got my perspective but there are so many more 🙂 If you’ve never seen this season before what do you think after reading this? Do you think you’ll give it a try?

OWLS Team Tour: When We Fetish Yaoi

Happy Friday Grimms!

I’m happy to say it is my turn to post something for our fabulous OWLS Blog Tour. I hope you are all familiar with this group by now but if not comment any questions below.

OWLS Team Tour:

June is known as “Pride Month” within the LGBTQ communities in honor of the Stonewall Riots that occored at the end of June in 1969. At OWLS, we strongly support individuals who are part of the LGBTQ communites as well as individuales struggling with their sexual orientation or gender identity.

  • Allows individuals to show their support to the LGBTQ communtites
  • Allows LGBTQ communites to express their love to whoever they want.

So for the “Team” topic, we will be discussing our favorite LGBTQ characters in anime and other pop culture related media, the impact of the yaoi and yuri genre within LGBTQ communities, our personal stories involving gender/sexual orientation, and etc.

Usually I would choose a specific show for this topic but today I would like to talk about Yaoi as a whole. If you are unfamiliar with the term it basically breaks down to a gay couple. I want to say first and foremost that I am a HUGE fan of a good yaoi. With that said I have some issues with the genre that I’d like to shed light on.

Now I could honestly go on and on about things that I would prefer to see fizzle out in the yaoi genre for example the reliance on rape culture and their insistence on portraying the two characters as the clearly defined “male/dominate” and “female/submissive” roles but alas I shall save that for a different post.

Today I would actually like to discuss about how sometimes as viewers of the yaoi genre we can start to look at these relationships as more of a fetish. This is a problem people! It’s a problem because we are influenced by the media and our experiences with it carry out into our real lives. By continually viewing homosexual relationships as a fetish for our benefit instead of a legitimate relationship we cannot be the allies we need to be for the LGBTQ community.

When we view homosexuality in this lens of, “Oh that’s hot. Their doing this to get my attention,” we start to overstep our bounds. Sadly in the yaoi genre there are many stories that perpetuate this line of thinking. Where the goal of the story is not to watch a strong relationship built on trust and understanding but instead the goal is to see how quickly the “dominate” one can take the submissive personalities pants off.

Now I’m not saying there is anything wrong with a sex scene. I’m saying that when in specifically the yaoi genre the storyline takes a backseat to the sex this can start to lead people who do not have experience within the Gay community fetishizing the validity of the relationship for their own turn on. To put it simple men are not attracted to men simply to excite the people around them. They are attracted to men because that is how they are born. Period.

As I mentioned above I love the yaoi genre and I really want more representation of the gay community in media and literature. In my opinion the yaoi genre still has a ways to go in creating diverse characters and storylines that truly represent the Gay community. I also think we as viewers have a long way to go when it comes to how we view yaoi.

For my finally statement to sum it all up I will leave you with this sentiment. The moment that we started looking at scenes between male characters and going, “Oh they just did that for fanservice” instead of saying, “Oh what a cute moment, I hope they get together” then we should have realized that we started viewing homosexual couples not as legitimate relationships but as tools for our own fetish.

That viewpoint carries into the real world when we see gay couples on the streets and say, “They’re just doing it for attention.” People are not in relationships straight or gay to get attention from random people on the street. Trust me.

I haven’t experienced a lot in the yuri scene but I feel like this might apply there as well. If you are familiar with yuri you’ll have to let me know in the comment section below. Also let me known if you agree or disagrgee with my statements, the best thing about doing these posts for OWLS is hearing varying viewpoints.

Finally I hope you checked out Remy’s post on the represenation of cross-dressing in anime and are looking forward to Arria’s OWLS post coming soon.

Catch you all later ❤

Code Realize: First Impressions/Three Things to Know

I am so behind on otome posts it is not even funny! I’m even more behind because I haven’t been posting regularly on Mondays. Please forgive me! I swear it is because I have been working hard. My lovely husband got me a PSVita for Mother’s Day and it has opened up a whole new world of glorious otome for me!

Saying I’m obsessed with it wouldn’t be doing my love for it justice. Let me tell you that! I have been playing up a storm on it people.

I know I have been on a Liar! Uncover the Truth kick but I ended up taking a mini break to play some After School Affair and then I got this PSVita and I have been playing Code Realize nonstop. I’ve been going otome crazy Grimms!

It is about time I started writing some things down!

Thank you for being so patience and enjoy this post as I chip away at my every growing backlog of otome posts I desperately need to write!

Today I want to discuss some first impressions of Code Realize and most importantly three things I feel anyone about to play this game should understand.

First Impressions

“Aksys Games and Idea Factory (creators of the Hakuoki series) proudly present Code: Realize ~Guardian of Rebirth~, an adventure/visual novel game that sweeps you off to times long past. A visionary reimagining of Victorian era London melds with steampunk motifs to create a world unlike any seen before. Play as a lonesome youth whose poisonous touch renders swift death unto would be companions. Unravel the secrets of her past with the aid of five unlikely heroes!” –GameStop

The Lovely Characters Include the Following:

Cardia: The MC cursed with poison flowing throughout her entire body making her incapable of touching anything without burning and in may cases killing them.

Arsene Lupin: Master Thief with a heart for JUSTICE. He may steal but trust me; it’s always for a good cause.

Impey Barbicane: Brilliant engineer! He may see unreliable but there is nobody better at what he does!

Victor Frankenstein: A scientist that use to work for the British Government. It appears that they have had a falling out though for reasons unknown.

Saint-Germaine: A wealthy count from France who helps provide lodging for everyone. He seems wise beyond his years and a bit otherworldly. What is it he gains from helping everyone out?

Abraham Van Helsing: Referred to as the Human Weapon and responsible for bringing down the King Vampire during the Vampire Wars. He seems like a very serious guy, small price to pay for the ability to take out just about anyone in a room.

I’m really digging it! I find the story line to be unique, the artwork to be beautiful, and the voice acting to be enjoyable. What more can I ask for in a game? I’ll admit it’s a little slow going before it become interactive but the story is interesting so I really didn’t mind.

You can buy this game new for about $30 or pre-owned for about $20 on GameStop. Money well spent so far in my opinion.

Code Realize2

Number One: Choose Wisely

Your choices decide which character’s route you reveal. Unlike some otome games where you look at a character and say I want to play their route, click on them and go, with this one it’s your choices throughout the game that lead you to that character’s route and a different ending.

So for instance let’s say right away you find yourself interested in Impey Barbicane then from the get go you need to be choosing any answer that brings you closer to him specifically or you’ll end up in another character’s route!

Also if your hope is to play through Arsene Lupin’s route your first time through forget about it. His route only unlocks once you have completed the other four character’s routes.

Number Two: Save

This brings me to my other big point. SAVE, SAVE, SAVE. The biggest mistake I did was to start saving once I was in a character’s route but I should’ve saved at the beginning after all of the characters had been introduced. This is a really important point because it takes quite some time to introduce all of the characters.

This meant that after I finished my first route and wanted to play through my next route I had to go through all of the beginning story part until the characters where introduced again! There is a fast forward button but trust me it isn’t fast enough.

Make sure to save at points once you are in the character’s route where you make decisions. Remember there are good ends, great ends, but also really bad ends. You unlock different images with the different ending so I like to catch them all but I don’t necessarily want to play through everything all over again to get there!

So remember to save people!

Three: Enjoy the Voice Acting

The voice acting is in Japanese while subtitles are in English. It’s basically like watching an anime with subs on! I really have enjoyed all of the voice actors so three cheers to excellent casting.

This is also good to know if you don’t actually speak Japanese (which I don’t) have no fear picking up this game! You will be able to follow along just fine ❤

Well that’s it for this Otome Monday! I look forward to seeing you all next week where I shall discuss another route from After School Affairs. Get pumped people!

Three Anime Characters That Describe GrimmGirl

Hi Grimms,

I hope you all were able to catch yesterday’s livestream! Today I thought I’d post something a little fun. It’s been a while since I posted on a Sunday so why not do something a little out of the ordinary, am I right?

I actually got this idea from Twitter! Recently I was tagged by the fabulous Lita Kino in a post that read “Explain yourself in three characters and tag 10 other people” so I of course followed through. Things like that are always pretty fun to me and I enjoy seeing what characters everyone else choses. It’s always really interesting to see!

That’s when this post idea came to me! I decided to take this Twitter challenge and turn it into a post by explaining why I choose the three characters that I did. I hope you all enjoy my choices!

One: Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon

Describe Yourself Usagi

I mentioned this before in my 30 Day Anime Challenge Post but Usagi and I are remarkable similar. We love to eat, read manga/play video games, and we can’t be on time for anything to save our lives. Your first impression of Usagi would probably be your first impression of me! I’m sure at first glance I seem a little unreliable and a bit of a bun head so to speak.

That’s just at first glance though! Much like Usagi I feel like I get it right when it matters most! I may not always be the bravest person in the room when it comes to myself but when it comes to others I have no problem telling you exactly what I think. I will defend other people until my last breath.

Much like Usagi I make mistakes… A lot of them, but I try my best! I try to think of others and to look at things from a different perspective. The fact that Usagi can be a completely goofball and totally serious and vulnerable at the same time is exactly why I can relate to her. She may seem like a ditz at first glance but the girl is a wealth of emotions. I find often times that is the people that are so focused on making sure that those around us are happy that cry the hardest, like Usagi’s character they don’t want others to feel sadness and it hurts when they do. It’s for reasons like this that she’s my favorite character in the series.

Two: Lucy Heartfilia from Fairy Tail

Describe yourself lucy

Gah! When people say they find Lucy annoying it’s like stabbing me in the heart and wrenching it about I swear! I completely get her character because I can relate to her. On the outside she looks carefree and seems to always have a smile on her face, but throughout the show you realize that this hasn’t always been the case.

She has suffered through a lot of hardships and even though initially you may think that she has nothing to complain about and leads a perfect life as her story unfolds you realize that this is not the case. What I like best about Lucy is it takes time for the people around her to see all of the different parts about her. I find that to be realistic. As she grows trust in her friends around her she is able to open up more with them and rely on them.

Another thing I can relate to is the fact that she decides to create her own family and home in a sense. She grows up feeling like she doesn’t belong but instead of giving up she decides to find/build a place where she does. The guild is what she found but her friendships with the other members she built on her own. I find that inspiring and reflective of some of the choices I’ve made in my own life.

Three: Naruto Uzamaki from Naruto/Naruto Shippuden

Describe Yourself Naruto

I’ve got to give my last spot on the list to Naruto! First off I fricken love both of these shows and I cannot hear a word against them. I understand that we all have our own tastes buuuutttt how can anyone not like this show?!

Sigh, moving on!

Much like the above to characters I can relate a lot to the fact that Naruto didn’t become a badass right out of the gate. He wasn’t born a natural prodigy. He had to work really hard to get others to recognize him and to become the man he is today. Quite frankly not a lot of people thought that he was going to make it but he did!

Even though it was hard and grueling he kept at it. I can relate to that a lot. We can’t go back and change our pasts and we can’t control how people interact with us. When however chose how we respond to these situations and how we plan on moving forward. I feel like Naruto and I share that ability to do these things. Again, just like me there’s room for growth and we both make mistakes all of the time but isn’t that part of being human?

I know I’m going to make mistakes but like Naruto I can do my best to learn from them!

I hope you all enjoyed this post ❤

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and be sure to comment below with three characters you feel describe you and why. I would love to learn more about everyone!

Blogger in the Spotlight: Krystallina from DaiyaManga

Hey Grimms,

It’s time for our Blogger in the Spotlight! This month goes to the talented blogger Krystallina from DaiyaManga. I think many of you will truly enjoy this blogger if you are not already familiar with the site. We’ll get right to it today and I’ll give you three excellent reasons to check DaiyaManga out ASAP.

Three Cheers!

One: The Slogan Says It All

“Finding the brightest gems in anime, manga, and video games at rock-bottom prices.”

Do I really need to say anything more? Krystallina puts it so perfectly! If you are into any of the above things (mark me down for all three) than DaiyaManga is going to be a wonderful resource for you! I know it has been for me. A blog dedicated to anime, manga, and video games? That’s basically the core of my being!

You had me at anime.

Two: Newbies Welcome

Are you new to the otaku world? Some of the terms can be hard to understand. I remember when I first started really getting into anime, so young and innocent… Until I curiously wondered what this, “Yaoi” term I kept coming across meant. Boy was I in for a surprise when I googled it!

Have no fear, Krystallina is here! If you go to DaiyaManga you will be happy to see a wonderful Glossary compiled with a bunch of different terms and such that you will commonly come across in the anime/manga scene.

A very cool resource!

Three: Oh the DEALS

Krystallina is keeping track of those manga, anime, and video games! Let’s be honest buying this stuff gets expensive quick so knowing when a deal is available is a must! We’ve got to stay on top of this people!

On top of letting her followers know when a deal is happening she also updates her posts to let everyone know when the deal is expired. I find that very helpful. There is nothing worse than thinking there’s a deal going on, getting to the site and being pumped, and then finding out it’s no longer available.

You’re going to find reviews and fun things like that on DaiyaManga but you are also going to find things unique to Krystallina. I think that’s pretty darn cool! So next chance you get I advise you check the site out. Explore a new blog and maybe find someone whose style you really connect with. Isn’t that one of the cool things about being in the blog world to begin with?

Thanks for checking in with me Grimms! I hope you enjoyed this Blogger in the Spotlight and I look forward to sharing another site with you all next month!

Peace ❤ Love

Liar Uncover the Truth Spring Break Event: I Don’t Like It

Hey Grimms ❤

Today’s Otome post is probably teetering on rant mode. You should probably just brace yourself for that. I wouldn’t say full on rant mode just a teensy bit ranty. I hope you still enjoy it though because I do feel like I’m bringing up some adequate thoughts.

As you might remember a while ago I did a post on my first impressions of Voltage Inc.’s Liar Uncover the Truth Spring Break Event and now that it’s over I’d like to follow up on that. So here are three things that really irritated me about the event.

Number One: WTF MC

I am normally all for this MC. I think we can all agree that in general she tends to be one fierce lady while still keeping her humor. Every once in a while she pulls a stunt that makes us want to scream, “RUN!” (Like when she confronted the Man with Anger Issues by herself) but in general she keeps it cool.

So I have to admit I was really thrown by her shadiness in this event! The premise is that she wants to got on a sweet Spring Break vacation to Hawaii but Oh, SNAP she doesn’t have the funds. That’s when a travel agent lets her in on a deal, if she has a never airline miles stacked up her and a friend (this is a couples only deal) can get a really affordably trip to Hawaii.

I originally thought that she would choose a guy who had extra miles and go from there. That’s not what happens. Instead she decides to rack up mileage points by inviting guys to different places in Japan. First off I can not believe that with the plane tickets and hotel fares she could be spending less money than just flying and getting a hotel in Hawaii but whatever. Apparently this is supposed to be a sound plan.

On top of (what seems to me) a ridiculous get mileage scam she is completely double booking her dates. At one point she invites three guys to the same hotel at the same time without their knowledge and just tries to carry on with all of them!

I’m sorry, but that is totally shady! That’s not the MC I know at all.

Not only is that shady but you know damn well if you went on a trip with someone and found out they stashed three other people around the hotel room to spend time with when they were supposed to be spending time with you, you would be mad. So I’m not letting this slide with the MC.

Number Two: These Men

I could not get over seeing some of these men that I knew were scumbags just hanging around her. It was to weird and I couldn’t get into it. I’m sorry but once you know that one of these guys will literally punch you in the face if they get upset and another one wants to make you into a human doll you can’t just forget that!

I wish that maybe for the event you could chose someone’s route or something so that you didn’t have to see these other douchbags. I mean some of these men (while liars) are totally forgivable… Some of them belong in jail. I’m just saying I don’t need to be cozying up to the jailbirds.

Number Three: Meh

I don’t know if it was the combination of the above to things but I found this event to be super boring. I didn’t even finish it all the way through. Once she started stacking her dates on top of each other and I realized I was about to spend two days with a man who will eventually kidnap the MC I was out. Plus having to use my energy to get cool points was just annoying. I need that for the main route!

eye roll

The event just didn’t have the same flare as the main game. I’m hoping I don’t have this reaction to every event game, but who knows. My experience with this event though has made me more cautious about trying out future events.

If this is kind of the general set up for the event games as far as the men go then I’ll probably pass. I mean I have know interest in getting to know “The Man Who Cheats” any further unless the route includes him getting run over by a bus.

Know what I mean?

Let me know your thoughts below! Happy Otome Monday!

I am feeling better everyone! Thank you for all of your well wishes ❤
