JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 1: The Ascendent One

Welcome Back Grimms!

I told you after my First Impressions post I would be continuing this show. I’m glad to announce I’m done with season one and I have my first impressions ready to go!

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

“Part 1 – Phantom Blood In ancient Mexico, people of Aztec had prospered. They had historic and strange “Stone Mask”. It was a miraculous mask which brings eternal life and the power of authentic ruler. But the mask suddenly disappeared. A long time after that, in late 19th centuries when the thought and life of people were suddenly changing, Jonathan Joestar met with Dio Brando―. They spend time together through boyhood to youth, and the “Stone Mask” brings curious fate to them” -Crunchyroll

There’s no getting around it this is a fun, entertaining show. I’ll admit it’s not a show I’m completely OBSESSED with (see Haikyuu and Naruto for reference) but it is a show worth watching. When I say I’m not obsessed what I mean is I didn’t feel compelled to binge it. I watched the first season of Haikyuu in about two days. I couldn’t stop! With JoJo I didn’t feel that same pull. I didn’t have to find out what happened next but I did want to find out and continue the journey. At no point did I want to drop it. I can also see how this has become people’s favorite anime. Its’ strong fan base is well deserved.

I enjoy vampire/supernatural type shows so the plot line kept my attention. There was also a good number of serious and funny moments. I mentioned this before in my First Impressions post but the pacing is a little odd at times. Someday I’ll read the manga to see if it’s the same there as well. Some moments just happened so quickly it gave me anime whiplash!

I think the biggest issue with part one is they cram Joseph and Jonathon’s stories into one season so I was unable to connect with the characters as deeply as I think I could have. It also made it hard to fully invest in the characters training growth. I mean it all happened so fast! It was just like, surprise I’m suddenly an amazing Hamon user that can hold my own against users who have been training their entire lives!

That aspect was a little irritating.

I have to give the show props though for its outrageous poses and fight scenes. You really can’t understand what I’m talking about until you watch the show but I’m telling you it is worth it for that alone! This could be just me but I get Dragonball Z vibes from the fight scenes. I don’t know if it’s how it’s edited or what but I can’t be the only one thinking this.

Okay I just want to make sure that if you are reading from this point onwards you are okay with spoilers.

Remember when I said at no point did I want to drop the show? Well that’s not exactly true because when Caesar died I was livid! His last fight only lasted one episode. I at least deserved at three episode battle to the death. He was my favorite character and they just took him away! It was the one character I started bonding with and he was just ripped to pieces like last years Cosmo. The depth of my anger can’t be quantified and when I thought JoJo died at the end I almost vowed to never watch this show again. His miraculous come back was magnificent and I’m back on the JoJo Bizarre Train! Just know that my anger came from a place of love for this show.

It just makes me so mad that Caesar worked his whole life and wasn’t even able to beat one Vampire. The writer couldn’t have at least made it so they both died? Or why couldn’t he have won his fight and died at Kars’ hand instead. Also can we all agree that Kars is the Frieza of this enterprise?

Finally I just have to point out the fact that Lisa Lisa is JoJo’s mom and we never discuss the fact that he tried to see her naked and tried to see her panties. Obviously he didn’t know she was his Mom yet but still when he found the photo and I started to suspect her true identity I was super grossed out.

100% How I looked figuring things out… What? Nooo… Wait… OMG.

Final Thoughts

If you enjoy over the top fight scenes, outrageous characters, fun banter mixed with serious moments, a kick ass soundtrack, and supernatural vibes then this is the show for you!

  1. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is another one of those animes that I just haven’t gotten around to yet. I obviously skipped the spoilers, but having read the rest of the post I gotta say it sounds like my kind of show! 😊

  2. I should probably do a review on this one too. I love the first season of JoJo but I agree that the show feels really fast paced. There are moments where something gets serious and then silly. It’s a random action anime but I love it. Even my brother, who is not an anime fan, agrees that the anime is over the top and fast paced.

    1. Ohhh Haikyuu!!!! Lol it is hard for me to read anything else when I’m in the middle of rereading Haikyuu XD it’s just so good that everything pales in comparison! Hahaha I can’t help but fangirl over it. I still have to take a stab at reading the JoJo manga. I’m usually a two volume sort of a gal. If I can’t get interested in it by the end of the second volume I conclude that it probably isn’t for me. How far did you get?

      1. Even in the anime I feel like it didn’t get really good until the seven year time skip. That’s when they discover the power of the mask etc so I’d hang in there until then 🙂
