Five Anime Community Pet Peeves

Buckle up Grimms.

I honestly love the anime community. In general I have found it to be incredible accepting and fun. I have made the best of friends through this community! But every once in a while I come across one of these things and I just wanna…

Recently this happened to me and this particular person managed to really get under my skin. This inspired me to write this little post. I’m not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing but I feel the need to have myself a little rant!

So in no particular order five things I could live without in the anime community.

One: The Mainstream Hate

What is it with some members being such haters of anything that becomes popular?

“Your favorite anime is Naruto? I’m sure you watch so much anime.” Rolls eyes in condescending manner.

Omgoodness SO WHAT if a mainstream anime is someone’s favorite anime?! Do you know how much time you have to put in to watch shows like Naruto/Naruto Shippuden, Bleach, One Piece, Inuyasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, and DragonBall?!

A lot!

Just because something becomes popular doesn’t mean it isn’t good anymore. It means lots of people really resonated with it. Heck even if the above anime are the only anime sprees you’ve seen that doesn’t make you less of a fan because someone else has seen more obscure titles.

It doesn’t mean you can’t have opinions on things. I’m so tired of people trying to make the shows people enjoy some type of weird pissing contest. It also irritates me when people act like just because a show gets popular all of a sudden it’s just not good anymore.

Whatever.

Two: Using The Culture Excuse To Exploit Others

What I mean by this is I can’t count the number of times that I or someone else has called out a character for being a bit on the rapey side only to be met with, “You just don’t understand the Asian culture!”

First off that statement is pretty without understanding.

Normalizing sexual assualt is prevalent in every country’s media not just Asian and it’s not going to change if we don’t address it. I find the scene where Mediolas on Seven Deadly Sins grops an unconscious Elizabeth at a bar uncomfortable and rapey. I find the fact that a teacher sleeps with Archie on Riverdale and it’s passed off as nothing because he’s a male uncomfortable and rapey.

Both of these scenarios are wrong to me. This isn’t an issue of culture. It has nothing to do with which country produced it. Every country could work on this. Stop singling out the Asian culture. And stop acting like normalizing these scenes are okay.

Three: I Love Yuri/Yaoi Except In Real Life

I don’t know if I was just naive but I honestly assumed anyone who was a yuri or yaoi fan was onboard with LGBTQ rights in real life in general.

Boy was I wrong.

It still blows my mind that there are people who will stan yuri and yaoi characters all day but then oppose rights to real life gay, lesbian, etc couples. All of a sudden it’s immoral?

So what you are saying is if you can’t get sexual gratification out of the relationship it shouldn’t happen? What the heck kind of logic is that?!

Just no.

Four: Asian People Just Want To Be White And Revere White People

…Are you for real?

Stop it. Stop being so douchey. First off Asians digging pale skin was something going on WAY before Europeans came into the picture. Second this statement reeks of a superiority complex. Third once again just stop.

I really can’t say anymore on this.

Five: If You Like Dubs You’re Trash

I said it before and I’ll say it again IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW YOU WATCH ANIME! Which ever way works for you is all that matters. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.

Well there you have it. My little rant for the day XD Sometimes you just have to let it all out! That being said I am going to have to do a Favorite Things About the Anime Community post to create some balance. While there are a few things that really get under my skin there are so many things I adore about this community. You can’t let just a few get in the way of all the greatness here!

  1. I so agree with this. People get very angry/bitter over some of the strangest things. Dubs are great, especially for those who are just learning about anime as well as kids. I know my younger kids can’t read well, so dubs are great for them. And I get genuinely disliking something – but because it’s popular? Ridiculous. You see this in music fandom too. Once a band gets popular they’ve “sold out.” Naruto is popular so, not as good. If you like it – who cares!

    1. Yes, yes, yes! And you know what I’m going to be honest I LOVE the dub of Ouran High School Host Club so much that I can’t watch the sub version of it. I personally think the voice casting is just to perfect and I can’t get past not hearing those voices with the sub.

  2. Wow, I agree with every single one of these. I especially get annoyed with 2, 3, and 5. I definitely hear you with The Seven Deadly Sins. I dropped it due to the nonchalant sexual harrassment. It got on my nerves! And I too was shocked to see so many people not supporting LGBT+ when viewing that but in entertainment format. I think when I first saw it I threw my phone I was so pissed. As for dub, I’ve been watching it since the beginning of my anime experience. I still watch some anime dub just due to liking the actors, or even just because it gives a better experience. I’ve been seeing so much hate for it, especially with YOI. t
The dub got slammed with hateful words. It almost makes me scared sometimes to mention liking dub, and it shouldn’t be that way!

    1. I had to stop The Seven Deadly Sins after three episodes I just couldn’t do it anymore. Ugh I know what you mean about your phone I felt the same. I was like what alternate universe am I in? Man I can’t believe that hate some people give dubs. They won’t even give them a chance!

  3. #3 is just horrible. It’s one thing to read about, say, a tsundere or oresama type and enjoy the story but avoid them in real life. Relationships shouldn’t be about drama or control. But to deny happy, healthy relationships in the real world between same-sex couples that you support in fiction? What the heck??

  4. Preach it! Here are my thoughts on your points:

    1. I think my favorite anime is still mainstream. If you were to ask me, I would probably say One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball, Yu-Gi-Oh! or Sword Art Online. I don’t watch seasonal like most people, only a occasion. The good thing about mainstream anime is that people who don’t know anime at least knows what they look like. I am pretty sure everyone knows Pokemon or Dragon Ball.

    2. I never seen Riverdale and I find it disturbing.

    3. I am going to be honest. I don’t support LGBTQ (I don’t know what is Q). I find it weird for people who likes Yaoi/Yuri and opposes homosexuality. It doesn’t make sense, but I agree with you.

    4. I have no comment.

    5. I watch Dubs and I only care about the characters and story. I hate it when I see people debate on what is better,

Anyway, great post Kat! Keep up on writing and this was really fun to read. 🙂

    1. Honestly it really bums me out how SAO gets so much hate. When it first came out people were raving about it but as soon as it got mainstream people started hating on it! Totally ridiculous. I really enjoyed s1 I admit I haven’t finished s2 yet, but my point still stands! People weren’t such haters on it until it went mainstream. One of these days I’ll have to do a post on Riverdale. I liked it at first but there was some things I took issue with. I haven’t watched the second season yet bc it looks like the things I didn’t like have just gotten worse. It’s totally weird that people who like the genre don’t support it. I’m kind of just like then why are you watching? There are some amazing dubs out there I don’t care what anyone says!

      1. Yeah totally. I am one of the few people who enjoy SAO. Whenever I hear this anime is horrible, I have to ask myself what am I missing and why they say that. It stinks that just because it has flaws, people are ready to attack on the fans who defend it for the little things. I heard Riverdale was supposed to be like a drama series of the Archie comics but on Netlfix. I am assuming they added those scenes to make it dark. Not to judge people, I always assume that if people support Yaoi/Yuri anime, they also support same sex couples. I guess people prefer fictional romance than real love. Dub or sub, it’s not about the language, it’s how you enjoy anime. If you prefer to watch it in its native language, go and enjoy sub. If you want to appreciate the English language, enjoy some dub. Either way, Kat you wrote an amazing piece in your post. This got me fired up and respond back. This is something fans need to read.

    1. I’m glad you haven’t had to experience all of it. Not that I experience it all the time, thankfully the majority of my interactions have been amazing! I sadly have encountered each of these at least once.

  5. We haven’t been in the community for very long, but points 1 and 5 are spot on. I don’t get why something can’t be good just because MORE people like it than before. That just doesn’t make sense to me. And honestly, dubs… anime is anime in every language. Everyone doesn’t speak Japenese and it’s nice to be able to actually listen to what the characters are saying. I prefer subs and dubs together, but you shouldn’t be judged on how you get your anime fix. I think you nailed this 🙂

    1. Thank you! Hopefully you never encounter the rest of them. If you did just remember the majority of the community isn’t like that! Welcome to the anime community though 💗 We’re glad to have everyone here!

  6. I completely agree with you on the Yuri/Yaoi thing. I’ve made a couple of irl anime fans and most of them think in a pretty conservative way. It’s kind of sad to think they’re on board to shipping same-sex fictional couples, but are absolutely hateful to them in real life 😦
