Hey Owls ❤
Long time no writing. You must forgive me for that. My pregnancy has been rough to put things politely. I’m sure you’ve noticed a lot of silence not only here but also my other social media accounts. I’m in my second trimester (finally) but the sickness and fatigue is still super strong, so I’m just trying to make it to January!
With that said I of course had to make a special exception for this month’s OWL post and dragged myself from the brink (aka the toilet… sorry for the over share) and pulled myself together to bring you this post on this month’s OWLS Tour “Mirrors”!
“Mirrors” (July 2017)
“Magic mirror, on the wall—who is the fairest one of all?”
When we look in the mirror, what do we see? Do we see ourselves or someone we don’t want to be? For this month’s theme, we will be exploring some of our favorite anime and other pop culture media that redefine individual beauty—inside and out. Some topics we may explore are physical appearances, social expectations on gender, and the importance of self-confidence.
As usual this prompt was brought to you by the lovely Lyn!
When I first heard this prompt I immediately thought of Ouran High School Host Club and more specifically Haruhi Fujioka one of my all time favorite characters. To start this off I want to point out that it usually takes me a while to get into a show. In fact the only anime shows that I have immediately fallen in love with off the first episode are Haikyuu, Yuri On Ice, Cowboy Bebop, and Ouran High School Host Club.
Haruhi blew me away in the first episode and she’s why I feel in love with the show so quickly. The reason was her absolute confidence in her self. I have rarely seen character (male or female to be honest but especially female) that was so comfortable with herself. It was refreshing and honestly a bit insane (in a beautiful way) to watch Haruhi in action because I was so unfamiliar with a character like her.
As I’ve touched on before I’m not exactly the queen of self-confidence. I’m much more confident now but growing up, forget it. I was a mess. So seeing a high school student like Haruhi is really inspirational.
In the first episode (spoilers) we find out that she’s a scholarship student in a super rich fancy pants school. I think anyone would feel intimidated being in that position but she doesn’t care at all. In her mind she belongs there because she worked hard and continues to be academically successful. What does she care if she’s poor or not? Do you know how comfortable with yourself you have to be to have an attitude like that in that sort of situation?!
On top of that we also discover that she is a girl. Again she is completely unperturbed by the fact that because of how she was dressed and her hair she was being perceived as a boy. She is so comfortable in herself and her gender identity that the perceptions of others are meaningless. Her main concern is simply her own comfort.
Again do you realize how confident in yourself you have to be to act like that in high school no less?
Throughout the show we see that Haruhi has carried this unwavering sense of self her whole life. From being unashamed of her father’s cross-dressing and considering it a normal part of her family life to being confident enough to travel overseas to study without her family and friends, she has a confidence inside her that propels her forward.
I believe it is also this confidence that changes the lives of her friends in the host club. Each of them is carrying their own burdens and self doubts and I think, much like a smile, Haruhi’s self confidence is contagious. Slowly the other members start becoming stronger due to her strength. It is also the reason I believe she is able to tell the Hitachi twins apart so quickly. Unburdened by worrying about her own self-image I believe she is able to be more observant of other people’s quirks and differences.
Haruhi inspires me to find that type of confidence in myself ❤
Let me know what you think of Haruhi and her brand of confidence! Also if you haven’t watched Gigi’s YouTube Video for her OWLS stop using Peach Girl than you are missing out and need to get on it! So proud that OWLS is getting more of a voice on YouTube ❤ Good on you Gigi!
Also make sure to look out for Moonid’s post on Monday. You won’t be disappointed! Do I ever lead my Grimm’s astray?
See you kids soon.
