First Impressions: Kamigami no Asobi

Welcome!

It’s time for another first impressions. After the great reaction I received from my First Impressions: Yuri!!! On Ice post I’ve decided to make this a regular thing on GrimmGirl. So I hope you all enjoy the posts.

I know I have been focusing a lot on spots anime lately but it really can’t be helped. With Haikyu on my mind 24/7 I need something to fill the void in between new episodes. It’s fair to say sports anime have basically taken over my life as of late. So I hope you all appreciate this non-sports anime post!

Today’s first impression will be on Kamigami no Asobi. Which is 100% NOT a sports anime. If you have never heard of this show before I will provide you with a brief description below.

“Yui Kusanagi discovers a mighty sword that transports her to another world. There, this ordinary high school girl finds herself face-to-face with the great Greek god Zeus. The God of Thunder has an unusual request: remain in the dimension he has created and attend a school of legendary proportions. Zeus acts as dean for a school of young, somewhat misguided gods. The bond between humans and gods has weakened, and it is now up to Yui to teach the gods about love and what I means to be human.” – Hulu

Nice animation….

I had really high expectations for this show. The description really grabbed my attention and it was rated 4.5 stars on Hulu. I’m a huge fan of myths spanning all cultures so I was pumped to see that they were tying Greek mythology into this. I was even more excited when I started watching the show and realized that they are also including gods from Norse and Japanese mythology. I was in heaven hearing the characters names.

To bad that is about the only thing this show has to offer.

I watched three episodes and I was bored to tears. This show is completely uneventful and the characters are so bleh. I don’t even understand the direction they are trying to take the show. Yui’s purpose of teaching the gods about humans is basically taken over by the god Apollo. I have no idea why he needs to learn more about humanity because so far he seems like a nice guy.

That being said I really don’t understand why any of the gods are there. I’m three episodes in and that really hasn’t been explained at all. Basically Zeus was just like, “They need to learn more about humans. Go teach them.” What exactly are they suppose to learn about humans? I’m so confused. Are they not nice enough? Are they just out of touch with humans? I legitimately don’t get it.

I have also never seen a more boring heroine. I was excited at first because I thought she was going to be this totally sweet swordswoman… Boy was I wrong. There is nothing exciting about her at all. Even her voice is boring. The sound of it makes me so sleepy on top of all the other uneventful aspects of this show.

I was going to try to watch a little more but luckily I talked with LynLynSays and JapanimeTalks (if you haven’t seen their blogs check them out by clicking their names!) and they let me know that what I was seeing is what I’ll be getting for the rest of the show. So with that on top of my experience with the first three episodes let’s me drop this show with complete confidence.

Terrible everything else

Final Thoughts

This show is not for me. I found it boring and lacking as far as the plot and characters go. The animation was really beautiful but it wasn’t enough to save the show. I need more to my anime.

If you have seen the show make sure to comment below! I’ve talked about it before but I think it is good to have varying opinions and takes on my reviews to help other people decide if the show is worth their time.

I do not own these images

  1. It sucks that this show doesn’t seem as good, and it’s hard to find any good shows after watching Haikyuu or Yuri on Ice (literally fangirling right now) but I’m currently watching Rainbow Days, I don’t know if you’ll like it or not but it’s super cute and funny. (Each episode is about 10 minutes)

  2. Tragically I watched this the whole way through on Crunchyroll and pretty much wondered why I did that to myself. The protagonist doesn’t ever evolve anything close to a personality and the mythology aspect is butchered beyond recognition. Other than that it is just a highschool harem show with no side characters (which I guess is possibly an improvement) and then we have a random crisis at the end so that they can at least pretend something has happened when in fact nothing did.
Sorry to anyone who liked this but I just found it mind numbingly boring.

    1. How did you get through it?! I to apologize to anyone who enjoyed this but I’m really impressed you made it through without falling asleep. I was so let down by what they did with the myth side of the show. Talk about a butchering… and the girl? I would literally forget why she was there.

      1. Even after the end I still don’t know why the girl was there. I don’t know what the gods learned (other than how to compete for a girl’s attention and most of them had that down after episode 1).

  3. That’s really disappointing that the story was garbage. I’m a big fan of Greek and Roman mythology from reading Percy Jackson while growing up, so this anime would have grabbed my attention big time. But since it’s a trash plot with horrible characters, I don’t think I could stomach it. Thanks for the heads up!

  4. Oh my gosh. Same here. I was super excited because other reverse harem fans recommend this, but it just very “meh” to me. I toughed it out and watched until the last episode, though. Hoping that things will get better. Sigh. You already know by that sigh. It’s too bad. The premise has something there. It could’ve been made more interesting and romantic, especially since they have an awesome cast of seiyuu. Unfortunately, the story just sucks!
