First Impressions: Yuri!!! On Ice

Yuri fans…. I can already sense your presence as I type.

That’s right today is my first impressions post for Yuri!!! On Ice. Basically what I did was watched the first three episodes to decide if this would be a show I would continue on with or I would drop to the wayside.

I actually debated a long time about starting this show. I had a lot of interest because I love ice-skating but I originally wanted to wait for the show to be fully released so I wouldn’t have to wait each week for the next episode. I’m already dealing with that anguish with Haikyu so I wasn’t keen to experience more of it. However the Yuri!!! On Ice fandom is strong on my TL and eventually I just couldn’t resist the curiosity. So with this in mind I decided last week to watch the first three episodes.

“Yuri Katsuki carried the hope of all Japan on his shoulders in the Figure Skating Grand Prix, but suffered a crushing defeat in the finals. He returned to his hometown in Kyushu and hid away in his family’s home, half wanting to continue skating and half wanting to retire. That was when the five-time consecutive world champion, Viktor Nikiforov, suddenly showed up with his teammate, Yuri Plisetsky, a young skater starting surpass his seniors. And so the two Yuris and the Russian champion Viktor set out to compete in a Grand Prix like none the world has ever seen!” –Crunchyroll

First Impressions

The opening theme is amazing. I couldn’t help but to watch it all the way through for all three episodes. The music in collaboration with the animation was simply beautiful. I still cannot get over it.

The animation for the ice skating is so great! I really find myself looking forward to every time they’re even remotely near ice because I want to see the animation. So far this show as been enthralling to watch and it has been sometime since I’ve watch an anime and thought, Wow that was beautiful. They really do an amazing job of synching the animation with the music to bring everything together. Well-done creators!

The relationship between Yuri and Viktor is giving me life. The LGBT activist in me cannot help but cheer as to how well their relationship is being portrayed so far. I love that they are showcasing their attraction in a realistic way. It’s not being done in a fanservice type way only meant to get a thrill out of girls who get their kicks out of imagining two men together (not that there’s anything wrong with that) but it’s refreshing to see a show (a sports show no less) portray the characters in a more realistic light.

Unlike a lot of sports anime shows, like Haikyu for example, the attraction between the characters isn’t imagined in the mind of the viewer egged on by clever word play and situations. In Yuri!!! On Ice the attraction between Yuri and Viktor is very clear. I like seeing a gay couple portrayed as more than just fodder for fangirls. I think it’s really great!

Yuri generally appreciates and respects Viktor’s style of ice-skating. He is in awe of Viktor’s abilities and finds his talent moving. Viktor for his part recognizes Yuri’s potential. While Yuri may not have confidence in himself Viktor has all the confidence in Yuri. Not only that but he is able to see the impressive talent Yuri has while the rest of the world cannot.

How freaking romantic is that!?!?

Viktor is literally giving up his love of performing will ice skating to help Yuri find his. Viktor isn’t doing this just for kicks but because he truly believes that Yuri can be great. I love that he is willing to push Yuri and have so much faith in him. I am truly in love with their growing relationship. In the third episode when Viktor whistled as Yuri took the rink I just about died.

Here Yuri is so unconfident in himself and Viktor (someone he has always looked up too) thinks that he is just the sexiest thing to hit the ice. That is so adorable! Honestly I feel like an adorable relationship moment happens every two seconds. That being said the balance between their relationship and the actual sport is being done really nicely so far!

Final Thoughts

I am compelled to follow this show every week! I have to know what happens! I can relate to Yuri’s lack of confidence and I want him to be able to overcome it. I am looking forward to watching Yuri and Yurio grow as ice-skaters along with Viktor. Viktor feels like he has lost his ability to surprise the crowd but he takes Yuri’s breathe away every time and I think that will eventually come in to play as we watch Viktor’s character development.

I am 100% on board with this show! And I hope they continue to portray Yuri and Viktor’s relationship in the same thread that they have been. I also have my fingers crossed they will continue to maintain the balance between the sports side of the show and the relationships of the characters.

Now I’m off to watch episode four ❤

  1. ha ha ha Yes, I have been waiting to see what you thought of YOI!! But, I feel you there is YOI is all over Twitter right now… every other post is a YOI fan art pic or tweet. But, I dunno, there is something oddly enticing about the show and I feel like it has a lot to do with how much of a ship tease it is 😛

However, I am very impressed with the choreography, it’s just really well done and like you said I also appreciate the balance between the ice skating aspect of the show and the relationship between Yuri and Viktor!

    Awesome post, Kat!!

    • I know I am totally ready for the end when Viktor confesses his feelings for Yuri after Yuri wins the Grand Prix of course lol. It’s going to be totally romantic and I really need this to happen for my life lol.

    • I have liked the first few episodes of YOI much more than I liked the first season of Free. I’m watching the second season of Free with the mindset that it isn’t a sports anime but a slice of life sort of anime to see if I enjoy it more. For me YOI has much more to do with the actual sport of ice skating so I have enjoyed it a lot more. If you watch it you should let me know what you think 😀
