Oh my heavens! We are on Day (Week) 25 of this Anime Challenge and I have to say I’m a little excited that we’ve hit the final stretch of this challenge. That being said today’s challenge is to name the saddest death in an anime so this post wont be exactly cheerful.
This challenge is going to take us back to Fullmetal Alchemist. If you have already seen this show then I’m positive you already know the death that I will be referring too. If you haven’t seen this show before I recommend choosing something else to read. What I will be talking about falls under the spoiler category.
Alright… Are you ready for some feels?
Now death is nothing new in anime and we have lost some great characters over the years. All genres have suffered a loss at one point or another but I can think of few deaths in anime that have affected me as much as the death of Maes Hughes on Fullmetal Alchemist.
I don’t want to judge you but if you did not feel like your hear was ripped out after his death then you may in fact be a future serial killer. How could anybody who has seen this show not be affected by this tragedy? It’s unfounded!
I think the reason that I took this death so hard is that it was so unexpected. Hughes was this loveable goofball that was obsessed with his daughter and family. He was really the perfect guy. The fact is that he was the type of person that you couldn’t help but to like. It’s those types of characters you never expect to leave.
His manner of dying was also horrifying. He was killed by Envy but he didn’t realize it was her at the time. Instead she disguised herself as his wife and murdered him. The look on Hughes face as he tries to process how Envy changed into his “wife” is gut-wrenching. His dying words are to his wife and beloved daughter and in that moment I have never felt so much anguish for a character.
The only thing that brought any sort of closure for his death as far as I’m concerned is Roy Mustang’s fight with Envy later. I felt so vindicated when he completely roasted that little wench. I didn’t feel bad in the least I tell you because I was still basically bawling my eyes out of Hughes. Envy’s death brought me a sense of peace I tell you.
So what are some of your saddest anime deaths? Along with Hughes I also thought (SPOILERS FOR NARUTO AHEAD) Neji and Asuma.
P.S.
I misted up a bit just thinking of Maes death. It still saddens me!
I do NOT own any of these images
Mustang does take this death really personally. There are few moments where he get’s to be really amazing but avenging Hughes is definitely one of them.

I was so happy with Mustang when he fought Envy. I think that has to be my top Mustang moment.

This was one death I literally was depressed

Me too. Like with other anime deaths I don’t know, it’s like it upset me but this one… It was so unexpected and brutal. I couldn’t even believe it. I cried a lot.

It’s so funny you wrote this today. My sister just started watching full metal and she texted me saying she cited when Hughes died. Like she literally was talking about this in Friday.

I honestly don’t know anyone who has seen FMA who wasn’t effected by this. Tell her told hold on until Roy fucks Envy’s world up. Hughes doesn’t come back but you feel a sense of justice.

Yeah I should tell her that. I didn’t think about that. But then I don’t want to ruin the story for her

True. The greatness of Roy will be even better if it’s a surprise.

I know this isn’t an anime but it is anime inspired. In RWBY when Penny dies…..I just can’t take it. And also when Pyrrah dies-waaaaaaahhhh😭😭😭😭
The way Penny died was much more depressing, but Pyrrah was my favorite character. The feels!!!!

I remember those two in RWBY. I thought it couldn’t get any worse but after what happened to Pyrrah, I lost my cool. I was filled with anger and sadness.

I really need to get into this show!

You should, I recommend it. If you don’t mind 3D animations or a girl lead cast, you will like it.

I am really excited about their animation style. It was the first thing I noticed. And I love girl led casts 😀

It’s really good in my opinion. If it’s possible, you could use the ideas from the girl characters for your next make up experiments.

That’s a great idea!

It’s just a suggestion but I thought it would be fun for you. Besides the girls, there are some guys that get the attention. Please listen to the intro songs, you will rock out!

Awesome! Great story, characters and music too. RWBY is one of those shows where anyone can get into. Just be careful if you make to season 3.

Oh no did he pass away?

Unfortunately yes. He died on February 1, 2015. The cause of death was from allergic reaction to medicine. He was the guy who created RWBY. You can check out his tribute video from Rooster Teeth:

That’s so sad 😢

It is sad. His fans were devastated about it. I think he was also voice in one of the characters. He’s the one that started it all. However, even in death, fans are still supporting him. His own brother took over on one of the characters he voiced.

That would be very hard 😥

It is but thank God they didn’t cancel the series. Even after his death, they’re working on season 4 of RWBY.

That’s really a relief I’m sure that made his fans and family happy that his work continues

Yeah, it definitely made me happy. Since the series is quite popular, Rooster Teeth and the rest of the cast are trying their best to help entertain us. I think Vic Migogna and Elizabeth Maxwell will still be in RWBY.

I like Vic’s voice so I hope he comes back 🙂

I can safely say he will. He has an amazing voice for one of the characters. He’s super cool.

This was really hard to watch. I was really hoping Maes would live but my hope for him was shattered. The funeral made it worse. The Naruto characters like Asuma and Neji caught me off guard. 😦

Maes death was really rough and so unexpected. I’m the same I really thought he would live too and the funeral was so hard. Asuma’s and Neji was also hard. I think Neji’s was harder on me though. I think because I felt closer to his character. I’d watched him grow up you know what I mean?

Yeah Maes was unexpected. He was like the one guy you would never expect to see get killed off. I definitly agree with you with Neji. Along with Naruto’s friends, we got used to Neji in the past and we was with the team. His death was very unfair because we will never see his reactions after meeting Naruto and Hinata kids.

Haha no your thought was exactly right. That’s how I felt when he died. It was very emotional, but def a good scene.

Oh okay. Still, in Naruto the creator can really surprise his fans by killing the good guy characters.

I agree but it made everything with the war more realist I feel. Because you lose good and bad people while fighting
LikeLiked by 1 person
Exactly. I remember reading about his interviews and he said that war is a dangerous thing because not only the soldiers get killed but innocent people too. War is a devastating thing in humanity.

I feel like he portrayed that in his manga.

Same here. He doesn’t hold back on the truth.
